And It Snowed, And It Snowed, And It Snowed! News from Mt. Sunapee!

Mount Sunapee  just received an additional 18+ inches of fluffy snow from this coastal storm and now the sun is shining bright. Hope you get to visit at easy-to-reach Mount Sunapee for what should be a stellar weekend.

Last Friday the snowmakers put the finishing touches on Elliot Slope, which was the 52nd snowmaking trail to open at Mount Sunapee. Since November,  snowmakers have made enough snow to fill the Prudential Center in Boston more than twice with snow. That translates into all 52 snowmaking trails covered edge-to-edge with an average of three feet of base. This is one of the reasons Mount Sunapee gets ranked with the best snow surfaces in the East year after year in the Annual SKI Magazine Reader Survey. We have more snow to work with than any other ski area in the East.

Not to worry. Goosefeathers Pub will remain open until the conclusion of Sunday’s 4:30pm Patriots-Jets game. There are four TVs in the Pub including two new 50” large screens. Settle in after skiing or riding, have dinner and enjoy the game. Everyone in the Pub for the game will receive a raffle ticket and for every point the Patriots score we will raffle off a free lift ticket to Mount Sunapee valid through the end of January. You must be present to win. Go Pats!

The EVOL Burrito Boggan made its debut during the Christmas/New Year’s holiday at the bottom of the Sunbowl. EVOL Burritos is one of the sponsors of FestEVOL weekend April 2-3 featuring O.A.R. in concert as part of the Bud Light Concert Series. Tickets are selling fast for this limited admission concert and ticket prices go up February 1.

On Saturday January 22 and March 12 Mount Sunapee is hosting Ultimate Groove Telemark Camps for women. Preserving the Past – The New London Historical Society

In 1952, some attendees at New London’s Old Home Day conceived the idea of founding an Historical Society to mark the upcoming 175th anniversary of the town’s incorporation.  A committee was selected to begin the undertaking.  On July 31, 1954, the day of New London’s celebration of its 175th anniversary, an organizational meeting of the New London Historical Society was held at the Town Hall.  “The purpose of this new organization  was to develop interest in the history of the area, to collect and preserve memorabilia and historically significant objects, and to educate and inform a growing population of the importance of our past to present day life.”

For a number of years, since they had no site of their own, the members of the Society met at a variety of locations in town.  However, in 1963, Walter Bucklin donated some farmland on Little Lake Suanpee Road where the Society began to assemble its collection of original and reproduction buildings (a total of 16) which host exhibits that depict aspects of 19th century life in the New London area.

The Historical Society offers a series of programs year-round, including a Holiday Open House, dessert socials with speakers on a variety of subjects, school visits, and many other special events and exhibits, all of which are open to the public.

Visit their web site at A window to the past:  New London Historical Society.

NEW LONDON RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The New London Recreation Department is headed by Chad Denning, Recreation Director.  The Department’s Mission Statement reads:  “The mission of the New London Recreation Department is to provide diverse and challenging life-long leisure activities to our community, thereby encouraging participation in programs that enhance one’s education, promote sportsmanship and develop good citizenship and overall well- being.”

With this in mind, the Rec Department offers a wide variety of programs both athletic and non-athletic, and special events for all age levels. Their web site (see below) offers information and links to many activities.  For example, there is a whole section on Active Lifestyle Links where one can find material on both events, such as racing, trail running and triathalons, as well as other opportunities to enjoy the out-of-doors:  the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway, the Springledge winter X-C ski trails, mountain biking in the Lake Sunapee Area, the Lake Sunapee Rowing Club, and more.

The Department offers indoor activities like “Old School PE” in November and December, yoga classes, and pick up basketball.  There are camps for soccer, lacrosse and outdoor adventures.  And this is only skimming the surface.  Visit the Town of New London’s web site at Town of New London, NH – and start enjoying all the great opportunities in our area.

Halloween and Other Happenings at Spring Ledge Farm!

Friday Night Corn Maze, Oct. 29th we will be open for our regular night maze event – this will be a non-scare event.  6:30-9:00 with parking at the farm.    Check out this video about the maze with Farmer Jay.

Saturday the 30th will be a Haunted Maze from 6:30-9:00 PM  featuring the talents of the Colby Sawyer Players (tickets will be $8.  A portion of the proceeds goes to the Colby Sawyer Players).  The Players will be in full creepy costume and will scare you out of your wits while you try to find your way out of the maze.

On Sunday the 31st, the actors will be in the maze at 5pm handing out candy to Elementary age kids as part of the New London Recreation Department Halloween Festivities.

Again on Sunday the 31st, the troupe can be found in the Haunted Woods from 7:30-9:00 to scare the pants off of anyone ages 12 and up.  The two events on Sunday will be free – donations to the Colby Sawyer Players appreciated.

About the Colby-Sawyer Players

This organization gives students an opportunity to be involved with theatrical productions on a  non-exclusive level (meaning that all students who want to be involved are able to be involved). The Colby-Sawyer Players will provide the campus community with a small-scale theatrical production each year in either the fall or spring semester. The organization provides students with the opportunity to discuss theatre with other students who appreciate the performing arts; therefore, promoting theatre appreciation across campus.

The corn maze will be closed after Sunday the 31st.  This is the last weekend of the year to experience the corn maze adventure.  The corn will be chopped and used as feed for local cattle.  We are already planning for Corn Maze 2011!

Stop in for a great pumpkin for your Halloween decor.  We continue to source them from Courser Farm in Warner, NH.  All shapes and sizes are available.  We also have a great supply and assortment of winter squashes, pie, pumpkins and gourds to add interest and character to your decorations.   For an interesting story about how the Jack-O-Lantern came to be a tradition, click here.

There is still time to plant bulbs for Spring color.  All of our bulbs are now on sale up to 40% off.
Do the deer enjoy the tulips as much as you?  Try planting a few cloves of garlic amongst your tulips.  The scent and taste of the garlic greens will keep the deer away.  We’ve had great success with this method here at the farm.  Plant the tulip bulbs first at the required depth (8″ or so).  After you’ve filled in the hole with soil, plant the garlic cloves an inch or so below the soil.  One or two every square foot ought to be enough to keep Bambi at bay.

November Hours:
We will be open in November Monday through Friday from 11-5:30 and Saturdays from 10-4.  We will be closed on the first 2 Sundays.  Featured products will be our own squashes, potatoes, carrots, greens and turnips.  We continue to offer The Good Loaf breads, Rocky Cannoli’s pies, Star Lake Farm beef and McNamara Dairy.  Starting November 18th, we will be open seven days a week with regular hours for the Holiday season.
